Is it normal to feel worse before feeling better after starting Synthroid for treatment of hypothyroidism? I have been on Synthroid a little over a week, and it has been exacerbating my symptoms -- headaches, fatigue, constipation, etc. Also I've been experiencing a lot of ambiet nervous anxiety since I started. Will things even out? Can I expect to start feeling better?

Just Me replied: "yes it is. it takes about 3 months to really start getting the full effect of the synthroid. The doctor should be testing you again at that time. I was not having much of the symptoms of hypothyroidism but still need a boost. Within my first 30 days I no longer had to nap 4 hours after taking a walk to recharge."

Kat B replied: "You should ask the doctor who prescribed this for you these same questions. This drug isn't anything to play with, trust me! I took it some years ago with a doctor's prescribing it for me and it threw my body into a total 'meltdown' tailspin! Totally destroyed my endocrine system. It was horrible. Come to find out...my body did not need it at all. It took literally months and months before I felt well and normal again. I 'rebuilt' my endocrine system by taking Nat. Sunshine herbs for the endocrine system. So..please..check with your doctor soon!"

xtmtx2003 replied: "No you wont start feeling better. Any T4 thyroid meds don't work at all, they make you worse and will make your life hell. You need to be on T3 only or a T4/T3 combination in order to feel good again. You could get these compounded at a compounding pharmacy or you could look into brand names like Cytomel, Thyrolar, or Armour."

My doctor put me on synthroid 50mg a week ago and I have trouble sleeping? I have a lot of trouble sleeping, and I get a headache everyday. If I don't have a headache, my head at least feels very heavy. Could synthroid be the cause?

Chels.RPI replied: "i take synthroid for hypothyroidism, but i have quite a bit of a larger doseage than you because ive had it for years. Recently though i have been having headaches, and i basically dont sleep at all. I think that my problem is because i havent changed my dosage in a while so i may be taking the wrong amount. Because you just got the medicine a week ago, its probably your bodies way of getting used to it, and it may even be too much or too little of a dosage. Usually doctors cant be sure exactly how much you need, so they start of small and check on you frequently, increasing until levels are normal. I would say that synthroid is at least partially at fault, but you may have something else going on also."

Lisa A replied: "Yes. An overdose of synthroid causes hyperthyroidism. Insomnia is a symptom of hyperthyroidism."

cbrdgt replied: "Synthroid usually takes a couple weeks for someone to feel a change. There are side effects of Synthroid, and headaches and insomnia are two of them. If this continues, you should let your doctor know."

Jerry replied: "Yes . It may well be part of you problem I too took synthroid for a short time and before I knew it I was unable to sleep for more than a few minutes at a time . After reviewing this problem with my doctor he removed me from synthroid and replaced it with levothyroxine , which is a generic source of the same medication , which also makes it cheaper. Also the dosage of your medication may be a little much for you have you doctor look into this alternate medication . If you check out synthroid on line you also find that after forty years of use the FDA has yet to approve it . Because the formula continues to change . Lots of luck and best wishes with this . But I caution you do not wait too long to check with your docto . losing sleep is very dangerous ."

what happens when you stop takeing synthroid? my mother-inlaw curently has been takeing synthroid for 5 years and for the last week she has been trying to get her scrip the dr. discharged her for a change in insurance so now she has been haveing problems with her calves locking up, headache and other things how serious is this and what shoul she do?

huggz replied: "She needs to get the synthyroid and start taking it fairly quickly. I'm not familiar with the US system of health care but this sounds very wrong! She should not have been left with no meds. Maybe she should go to the ER."

Did anyone experience dizziness after taking Synthroid? I have been feeling even more tired and more dizzy after taking this medicine. I feel so dizzy and so out of it, I've been on it for about 2 weeks. Is this normal. I want to feel better and energized already. I also feel like pressure headaches. Im just not comfortable. Oh and I have the runs.

Zsa*Zsa* Galore replied: "I used to take Synthroid but, never had any dizziness. The patient insert lists nervousness but, no dizziness. Call your doctor & let them know about your symptoms. They may need to adjust your dose but, they usually say that it takes about 4-6 weeks for you to really feel the difference. Synthroid has a long list of drugs that can cause interactions. They are: Amiodarone Androgens (male hormones) Antacids and anti-gas medications Antidepressants Blood pressure drugs Blood-thinning drugs such as warfarin and heparin Chloral hydrate (a sedative) Cholesterol-lowering drugs Diabetes drugs, including insulin Digitalis-type drugs such as digoxin Estrogen products and oral contraceptives Furosemide Growth hormones Hormone inhibitors Immune system drugs such as interferon and interleukin Iodide Iron supplements Kayexalate Ketamine Lithium Methadone and heroin Metoclopramide Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as phenylbutazone and aspirin Parkinson's drugs Propylthiouracil (a thyroid inhibitor) Seizure medications Steroids such as dexamethasone and hydrocortisone Stimulants such as epinephrine Sucralfate The cancer drugs 5-fluorouracil, 6-mercaptopurine, mitotane, and tamoxifen The tranquilizers perphenazine and diazepam The tuberculosis drugs aminosalicylate, rifampin, and ethionamide Theophylline A high-fiber diet, soy-containing supplements, and walnuts can also interfere with the effects of levothyroxine. Tell your doctor if you take any of these prescription drugs. *Also, high blood pressure & diabetes are conditions listed that may cause your symptoms to be worse.... these conditions may affect your dosage. The extra fatigue, dizziness, & diarrhea may indicate that you are getting overstimulated. Definitely call your doctor....you may need to have more blood work done to check your current thyroid levels. Good luck!"

What cold medications should be avoided while on Synthroid 112 mcgs? I have a stopped up nose cant breath out of either side and drainage down my throat and headache I would rather use something natural or as close too it as I can get . Please recommend

Bob G replied: "It really isn't dependent on the dose of synthroid. The real question is the type of thyroid problem you have. If it is simple hypothyroidism most cold medicines are safe to use. However, the first and most important thing is to talk to your doctor about it. Even a pharmacist can give you good advice. Please do not rely on advice given here."

What meds for hypothyroid, besides synthroid? I have been taking levoxyl for about a year, still feel bad, back and neck pain, headaches, tired, not sleeping well etc etc. What other meds could I try?

Roger N replied: "There is no other. Go get your T3 checked again."

Angela V replied: "Porcine glandular extract available at ProHealth, ImmuneSupport.com"

DNA replied: "The back and neck aches are very indicative that you may need T3. I suggest you look into Armour thyroid. It works wonders for me. I started out on Levoxyl. It did nothing for my hypothyroid symptoms, only lowered TSH. I knew there had to be better treatment and searched for a dotor who would put me on Armour. Below are some thyroid sites that talk about Armour. Best of luck to you. Remember when you test your thyroid to always test in the morning and test first, then take your medication. Other medication include, Unithroid, Cytomel, Naturethroid, Thyrolar, and a few others.....but I highly recommend Armour."

Help! I've been taking synthroid for a year and the last 2 months I'm getting very bad side effects? Numbness, Heart palpitations, blurred vision, headaches, sweating. When I exercise I become so red it takes 2 hours to return to my original color...I went to the doctor and she says the dose is not too high...

northstar replied: "stop the drug and go to the emergency of your nearest hospital."

Chocolate Chip Meringue replied: "I can't say definitely that Synthroid is causing those problems, but I can say definitely that Synthroid is not the best treatment for your hypothyroid. And you may have adrenal fatigue from being on it. Synthroid, Levoxyl, Levothyroxine, et all are T4-only meds. T4 is a storage hormone. They've been prescribed by physicians for nearly 50 years. And...they have never worked. Sure, some may feel better. But nearly everyone on these lousy medications has lingering symptoms of hypothyroidism. And raising it does no good. Additionally, being on a poor treatment heightens your risk of having sluggish adrenals. And that it not fun. Here is a page about T4 meds: Here is a list of symptoms that linger while on these meds: What will be a better treatment is desiccated thyroid, aka Armour, Naturethroid, etc. It contains exactly what your own thyroid would be giving you: T4, T3, T2, T1 and calcitonin. As a result, it removes all symptoms. And here's a summary of everything: And you'll possibly have to work to find a doctor who is wise enough to understand all this, or one who is at least open-minded about it: The above pages are from a patient-to-patient website compiled by thyroid patient activist Janie Bowthorpe. She also had a book by the same name, Stop the Thyroid Madness, and I highly recommended it. It's easier to refer to and even has more detail."

Patientsville P replied: "try sideeffects101.com. They have community comments about drug side effects and safety polls."

Anyone ever used an herb in the place of synthroid, please elaborate???? synthroid makes me keep the headache. have been checking out thyroid assist by nativeremedies.com. please give me your input on this!!thanks

huggz replied: "You should take these with a great deal of care, many are not what they claim to be and nowhere near as effective as they claim either"

no_frills replied: "Haven't try it yet, but you may want armour thyroid. It is a natural prescription drug from dessicated pig thyroid. Many people claim they feel better on it."

Worried about first dose of Levothyroxine (Synthroid)? Hi. I got my thyroid checked because of problems I'd been experiencing (menstrual problems, decreased tolerance to cold, mood swings, can't get weight off, headaches) and was told that my levels were on the high side at 4.1. My doc put me on Synthroid, 25 mcg. I got my prescription for Levothyroxine (substitution) instead. My question... at first I was glad to be told this, but since reading about the side effects, now I'm worried to take this first dose. I've read about people losing hair... having heart problems... the shakes... thoughts of suicide... etc. This sounds worse than what I am already dealing with! Not so sure if I want to begin this medication now or not. Anyone else had these feelings? What was your first dose of Levo. like at 25 mcg?

Stephen replied: "on such a small dose you won't get any side effects"

Avonlea replied: "I have never had any side effects from taking thyroid replacement. I have never heard of anyone else having side effects either. You will lose your hair if you don't take it."
